Laura Moriarty’s The Chaperone is a captivating novel about the woman hired to watch over an irreverent Louise Brooks in New York City in 1922. Louise was a stunningly beautiful girl who would go on to become a famous actress and icon. But at thirty-six Cora Carlisle had personal reasons for accepting the trying task of accompanying the arrogant and spoiled 15-year-old. For Cora, a wife and mother who had just discovered her husband’s shocking secret, New York was her chance to become liberated, even as she tried to keep her young charge from doing the same. Over the course of the summer, as Louise’s star rises, Cora too has experiences that will help her decide how, in this “modern” age, she will live the rest of her life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the evolvement of the characters. Strong but human, and interesting developments along the way. Would recommend it!

Different story line and I was able to stay with
it even with two grandchildren doing homework
at the same time. Literally, could not put it
away. Finished it in record time. I thought I
had the correct ending but hers was PERFECT.
All the ends were tied together in super
package.

This book is not likened to anything I have thus read. I have read approximately 400+ novels, as it is my favorite pastime. The weaving of all the characters, and their stories, was marvelously done. It is a must read, even for those not interested in this type of story (as I was not). Definitely a page turner!
