Author Letter
Dear Mystery Lovers,

How far would you go to keep a secret?  What if keeping that secret threatened your safety?  What if it threatened the lives of the townspeople you've sworn to protect and serve?  These are some of the questions Chief of Police Kate Burkholder must ask herself in my debut thriller, SWORN TO SILENCE.

The book is the first in a series set in bucolic Painters Mill, which is in the heart of Ohio's Amish Country. I've always loved stories that juxtapose good and evil, and I couldn't have asked for a more fitting locale.  The tranquil beauty of Painters Mill and the gentle hearts of the Amish stand in stark contrast to the evil stalking the town.

Kate is a far cry from your typical cop.  Born Amish, she chose the "English" way of life over her Amish roots after a life altering event during her teens. She's a troubled, complicated and imperfect woman-with a harrowing secret that pits her on a very personal level against a depraved adversary she may have faced once before.  Throw in a rogue BCI agent and a town council full of politicos, and Kate has her hands full.

If you like edgy thrillers chock full of ambiguous characters, SWORN TO SILENCE will fit the bill. Just one word of caution: if you read the book at night, keep the lights on. I've been told it's really scary.

Gone Missing

Chief of Police Kate Burkholder, whose Amish heritage serves her in good stead among the simple citizens of Painters Mill, Ohio, returns in Linda Castillo’s latest thriller, Gone Missing.

Rumspringa is a rite of passage for Amish teenagers, during which they are allowed to set aside the strict rules of their faith and experience all that contemporary American life has to offer…mostly, a bit of drinking and listening to music. Ordinarily, teens emerge from rumspringa intact, if a bit worse for wear and all too aware of the dark side of the modern world. But this time rumspringa ends tragically when a teenage girl vanishes without a trace.

The disappearance sends waves of terror through the close-knit, family-oriented Amish community. And soon after Kate, along with state agent John Tomasetti, arrive on the scene, the news gets worse: The missing girl has turned up—dead—and another teenage girl has disappeared.

As Kate and John struggle to break through the community’s isolation and suspicion to uncover clues about the girls’ lives, links emerge to a years-long pattern of unsolved disappearances. Can Kate find the solution to the puzzle before the killer finds her?

Vulgarity not appreciated
February 05, 2013

Plot is good. However, Vulgarity in Amish based books is inappropriate and reflects poorly on the author and editor.

good story
July 24, 2012

I only gave this book 3 stars because although it was a great story the language was getting to be too much after a while. The Amish do not use this type of language and I was not expecting it when I purchased the book. I have not read any other books by this author and I purchased it based on the description given by the book club preview.
