In the 1980s, the farm crisis hit Spencer, Iowa, hard and to support her family, single mother Vicki Myron took a job as the sleepy little town’s head librarian. But she soon had an unauthorized helper. One frigidly cold morning, Vicki came upon a tiny, half-frozen kitten in the night drop box. Dewey, as he came to be known, grew into a people “person” whose rascally antics provided laugh-out-loud entertainment for library patrons, and his sixth sense about those in need made him famous, drawing people from hundreds of miles around. The story of how Dewey came to be a beacon of hope for Vicki, the town of Spencer and for all those whose lives he touched, will capture the hearts of animal lovers everywhere. Photos.

That was his name and he was just as unusual! The whole town loved this cat and you will too! It covers his whole lifetime of 18 years. Very worthwhile reading! He was a therapy cat without any training. Read it!

Dewey ... how cute could a story be? Just proof that animals know us better than we do. Finished book in one day, couldn't put it down.

Well written, and a heart warming story. Anyone who has every owned or been around a cat for a period of time will understand and love this book.

a great testimony to the amount of love one single cat can have for an entire town. great descriptions of the midwest during the seasons (the land and the people) making me homesick for that area. very good read.

I liked this book. I had never heard about Dewey before a friend of mine told me about this book. I guess they needed some fill-in material so we got to hear all about the author's life. A little info would be enough, but there was so much about her that it can been handed down as a family heirloom. The Dewey stories were adorable, but I quickly became bored about half-way through.
