One Thousand White Women

Based on an actual historical event, but told in diary form, this novel is the story of May Dodd—a woman who travels west in 1875 and marries the chief of the Cheyenne nation.

Placed in an asylum by her high-society family, May finds hope in a controversial solution. By agreeing to marry the chief of the Cheyenne and acclimate his people to American culture, she will gain her freedom. So she heads West for the Nebraska Territory, knowing that, within two years, her duty will be served. During the long trip, she meets and falls in love with Captain John Bourke. But she keeps her word and marries Chief Little Wolf. She soon becomes pregnant and, when her baby is born white, she realizes the child is not the chief's at all—but Captain Bourke's.

May finds herself caught between two men—with heartbreaking results. It's a fascinating story of love and betrayal that Winston Groom (author of Forrest Gump) calls ''a superb tale of sorrow, suspense, exultation and triumph.''

I enjoyed this book
May 07, 2010

I enjoyed this book and passed it on to my Mother who also enjoyed it. The characters were interesting and the entire premise of white women going off to marry into the tribe to encourage assimilation was unique. Each had their own reasons for taking on this adventure and each had different experiences. Very nice historical fiction.

a little disappointing

I enjoyed parts of this book, but was a little disappointed with the stereotypes and inaccuracies. May i9s a good character, but most of the others were pooly drawn, especially the southern belle--way off the mark. The author obviously knows nothing about the south.

This was one of the best books I have read for a long, long time. I just hated to see it end. I felt as though I was there, and shared it all with the women. Will look for more of this author's books.

I selected this book because it had good ratings from other readers. I was not disappointed. I found myself chuckling and having to share some parts with my husband. Unique theme with a good story line.

I hate this book.

I wasted my money buying this book. It was stupid. And all that sex stuff was just not for me. It is the worse book I have ever read and I will never buy another one by this author. I hate the way he writes. Lydia
