The Scarpetta Factor

It may be a week before Christmas, but Kay Scarpetta is in an unholy mess. Her increased visibility as senior forensic analyst for CNN is prompting unsettling on-air phone calls, particularly one from a former psychiatric patient of Benton Wesley’s. Is the suspicious package awaiting Kay when she returns home a threat from the caller warning off her latest case, a surreal plot involving a famous actor accused of an unthinkable sex crime and the disappearance of a millionaire? Adding to Kay’s anxiety is the invitation to host her own TV show—and the worry that viewers will come to think she has an uncanny knack for solving cases. If only it were so! The Scarpetta Factor is Patricia Cornwell at her brilliant, page-turning best.

the last Scarpetta

my 1st and last. Build a plot line and then end it in 2 pages; over done and wordy technical descriptions; non-explanations of past relationships; run on sentences and then you have the perfect mystery novel, not

Boring
November 16, 2009

Don't waste your time. You keep thinking you should stick with it in case it gets better...it doesn't. The whole thing is boring and the characters don't progress from the last novel. Kay, Benton, Lucy, Jamie...they're all narcissistic. The whole crime world is after them because they are so great, so intuitive, so brilliant...whatever! Cornwell's books used to be packed with intrigue and true mystery. The evil of the bad guys used to be developed enough to be believable. The intelligence and reputation of the good guys was well deserved because Cornwell used to develop a plot line with clues and events that made sense and led to a terrific, well-explained ending. In this book, she droned on and on about nothing of significance, and then BANG, at the end gave us some lame explanation of who was behind the crime. 90% of the book had nothing to do with the ending.

frustrating, confusing,and boring
November 15, 2009

I am 250 pages into this 400 page stinker. I sure wish I would have read the reviews before buying it. I learned a lesson. I found this book so confusing, couldnt tell who was talking half the time and she eludes to situations but never explains them. Same with terminology.

Not her best
November 15, 2009

I have been an avid reader of Patricia Cornwells books from the beginning. Always, I have trouble putting them down and read them very quickly. Not this book! I had to force myself to finish it. The plot really didn't tell us very much and at the end it really wasn't the usually suspense. I do not recommend this book of hers at all.

Eh
November 15, 2009

I picked this one up hoping to recapture the thrill of earlier Scarpetta books. It could have been so much better. I am sick to death of Jamie the DA and Lucy is a drag. Benton is a shadow of his former self. Marino seems to be in top form at least. I wish she had gone into what the Chandonne brother did to make himself into someone they didn't recognize. Due to the great ones in the not so recent past I'll give the next one a try but if it's as lackluster as this one, I'll wait for the used paperback trades.
